Junior Golf Program

In partnership with Junior Golf Preparatory Academy (JGPA), Lake Nona’s junior golf program utilizes a game-based methodology to introduce and engage young players to the sport, while elevating each players’ skills and experience. Led by Nicolas Otero, who will coach alongside Lake Nona’s team of golf professionals, the program features two divisions:

Learn 2 Play – Group skills and on-course clinics for beginners
Learn to Compete – Designed for juniors that are advancing in the game and beginning competition

LEARN 2 PLAY METHODOLOGY
The Learn 2 Play program is a unique approach to junior golf. JGPA coaches excel at creating high-energy training stations that allow juniors to develop skills naturally through golf-centric games, while building a passion for the sport. Through a structured play methodology, students will develop the three fundamental golf competencies: putting, chipping, and full swing. By focusing on long-term development in place of short-term results, the program successfully transitions children into active golfers.

ABOUT JGPA FOUNDER & INSTRUCTOR, NICOLAS OTERO

After working as a junior golf program director for five years, Nicolas Otero, founder of the Junior Golf Preparatory Academy (JGPA) noticed a lack of great golf programming available for young children. This led to the creation of JGPA’s Learn 2 Play program – built around utilizing game-based learning to teach the fundamentals of golf. Since launching in May 2022, the academy has rapidly expanded to become one of the largest junior programs for kids ages 2 – 8 in the state with over 260 weekly junior participants and over 200 coaches certified in the JGPA methodology.

Nicolas has an M.B.A. from Crummer Graduate School of Business and extensive experience in the world of junior coaching. He is certified with U.S. Kids Golf, Positive Coaching Alliance, and in Child Psychology from Yale. He is also the official junior coaching consultant for the Colombian Golf Federation, where he certifies coaches, audits classes to ensure junior engagement, and consult with clubs on how to build successful junior programs.

He is excited to coach alongside Lake Nona’s team of golf professionals as we continue to elevate the junior coaching and training experience for our Member families.

MONDAY CLOSURES

The Club and golf course have select Monday closures during the fall, winter, and spring seasons with the exception of holidays. Dates and times will be announced and reflected on all Club calendars. The Club will continue its scheduled Monday closures through the summer months, as it has historically done. The Club reserves the right to close the golf course in consideration of charitable and corporate outings.

DRESS CODE

All players must be appropriately attired on the golf course and driving range at all times. For men and boys, Bermuda-length shorts or slacks, sports shirts with collars, sweaters, vests, golf jackets, etc. are acceptable. Hats are to be worn with the bill forward and shirts must be tucked in at all times. We kindly ask gentlemen to remove their hats when entering the Clubhouse. For women and girls, golf shorts, skirts, pants, and skorts are acceptable. Shirts with sleeves may have a round neck or collar; sleeveless shirts must have a collar. Ladies are permitted to wear hats in the Clubhouse. Swimwear, halter tops, tank tops, cut-off shorts, jeans, leggings, athletic shorts or slacks, T-shirts, flip-flops, sandals, and bare feet are not permitted.

GOLF CARTS

The Club maintains a fleet of golf carts for Members and their guests which are strictly for use on the golf course only. Club carts are not permitted for use around the community and are strictly prohibited from driving off golf course property. Cart privileges will be affected should this policy not be followed.

At busier times, when necessary, Members who are playing together may be asked to pair up in a cart in order to best manage the fleet’s availability and schedule. We appreciate your cooperation.

Members who reside within the Lake Nona Estates Community may operate a privately owned golf cart on the golf course or driving range (trail fee applies). All privately owned carts must initially be approved by the Director of Golf and then registered with the community security department on an annual basis. In order to operate a golf cart (Club-owned or privately owned) on the course, the driver must hold a valid driver’s license.

PACE OF PLAY

The GPS-enabled golf carts are effective in monitoring the daily pace of play. By having complete vision of the movement of all carts, the professional staff can track players falling behind and can communicate to that cart directly, in addition to the ranger’s efforts to ensure play remains at an enjoyable pace. As the USGA standard pace of play for Lake Nona is 4 hours and 10 minutes, we try to adhere to a maximum pace of 4 hours, a reasonable time for a round of golf. Should you be playing at a much faster pace, please be respectful of your fellow Members and allow them to play at our standard pace. If you have any concerns, Members are to contact the Professional Shop for assistance. In the interest of harmony and community within our Club, at no time, should Members police other Members.

BUNKERS

Select bunkers are designated as waste bunkers, or native areas, which become part of the general area of the course. In these areas, players may ground their clubs but must not improve their lie. Practice swings are permitted in waste bunkers as these are a general area. Waste bunkers are identified as:

  • Bunker left of Hole 1 tee
  • Bunker right of Hole 2 tee
  • Bunkers left and right of Hole 8 fairway
  • Bunker left of Hole 9 tee (runs into Hole 10).
  • Bunker left of Hole 10 fairway
  • Bunker left of Hole 11 fairway

All other bunkers remain as bunkers, which are defined in the USGA rules of golf as specially prepared areas of sand and will have rakes present.

MOBILE PHONE USAGE

The use of mobile phones on the golf course is strongly discouraged; however, if it must be used, the following courtesies apply:

  • Mobile phones must set to silent mode when on the course.
  • Calls must be made away from other players and should not interrupt the pace of play.

WALKING POLICY

Members and their guests are permitted to walk the golf course.

JUNIOR PLAY

Juniors (children of Members under the age of 18) may play the golf course with a parent Member or adult Member during the times allocated for Members and guests. Juniors may play the golf course unaccompanied by the parent Member or adult Member dependent on their age and skill level. Juniors may be required to pass a player’s ability test, as administered by a member of the Lake Nona professional staff. Juniors under the age of 16, or without a
valid U.S. driver’s license, are strictly prohibited from operating a golf cart either owned by the Club or a privately owned golf cart.
